The CCC Fresno Center is a non-residential facility where Corpsmembers commute to work daily. Schedules vary but crews typically work four 10-hour days Monday through Thursday. Energy crews may also work evening shifts.

The center is located in Fresno, just a short drive away from Fresno Yosemite International Airport. Corpsmembers complete projects throughout the Central Valley and nearby Sierra Nevada. Crews may also be dispatched across California, or out-of-state, on emergency assignments.

The Fresno Center offers many training opportunities including forestry, energy, wildland firefighting, and other natural resources work. The center regularly partners with the National Park Service, CAL FIRE, California State Parks, U.S. Forest Service, Caltrans, and Kings River Conservation District on projects.

The California Conservation Corps partners with California State Parks, Caltrans, county and city departments, and area non-profits to enhance the built environment. CCC Corpsmembers may complete a variety of projects such as building or maintaining park facilities, installing signage, retrofitting energy systems, creating defensible space, and reducing flood risk in communities.

All Corpsmembers respond to emergencies across California and beyond. Assignments can last up to 21 days in a row and Corpsmembers may work up to 16 hours in a day, earning excess pay. Crews support wildfire base camps, protect homes from flooding, remove debris, and more.

Corpsmembers at the Fresno Center improve the health of California’s forests by planting seedlings, collecting cones and seeds, and removing invasive and/or fire-prone vegetation. Corpsmembers enrolled in the CCC complete an array of projects such as planting young trees, collecting cones and seeds, and removing invasive and/or fire-prone vegetation.

Fresno Corpsmembers assess habitats, remove invasive vegetation, plant native species, stabilize slopes, or implement additional modifications to enhance natural environments. Corpsmembers may complete this work in forests, rivers, streams, or other sensitive habitats.

Trails

Serving on natural resource crews, Corpsmembers construct and maintain trails for public recreation. Project work varies but may involve clearing brush, rebuilding trail tread, installing rip rap erosion control, constructing bridges or boardwalks, and more.

Wildland Firefighting

The CCC Fresno Center operates one wildland firefighting hand crew in collaboration with the CAL FIRE Fresno-Kings unit. Corpsmembers cut fire line, lay hose, and mop up wildland fires. They also reduce wildfire risk by removing vegetation, creating fuel breaks, and participating in prescribed burns. Crews respond to local calls and can be dispatched statewide.

Fresno Corpsmembers often camp closer to project sites, called spikes, in wilderness areas or when projects take place outside of a reasonable commute.

Education Program

At the Fresno Center, Corpsmembers can finish their high school diploma, explore community college opportunities, and develop the knowledge and skills needed to be successful in the CCC and beyond.

Corpsmembers can earn between $2,000 and $4,000 in scholarships during their first year of service with the Brad Duncan Scholarship.

When assigned to a spike or emergency, can I park my personal vehicle at the center?

The center only offers street parking to Corpsmembers commuting to the center daily. It is recommended that Corpsmembers get dropped off or commute with others. Corpsmembers take all risk of theft or break-ins if leaving their vehicle.

Will the Fresno Center help me get my driver license?

Yes, sometimes. For Corpsmembers working on promoting within the program to a Specialist or Crew Leader, the center will assist in getting the necessary drive time, written test preparations, and guidance on pre-drive inspections. Corpsmembers may also be given appropriate time off to go to the DMV to complete testing.

Are there computers I can use at the center?

Fresno Center has 10 desktop computers and 9 laptop computers available for Corpsmember use during specified hours, 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Corpsmembers may use these resources for job searching, resume construction, and online courses. Approval must be received to use the computers.

Does the center of a gym I can use?

Yes, the center does have gym equipment available for Corpsmember use during off-duty hours. Corpsmembers must review basic gym safety and etiquette prior to use.

If I enroll at the center, can I immediately join the Forestry Corps crew?

Yes, if there are openings at the time of completing initial entry training you may be able to join.

If I enroll to join the fire crew, will I be on the crew immediately?

Possibly. Corpsmembers who indicate their pre-enrollment interest as wildland firefighting and have demonstrated to Recruiters that they are fire ready by completing their fire tracker, may be able to immediately join the crew.

Corpsmembers may request to join the fire crew after serving on a natural resource crew. Once training is completed, Corpsmembers are evaluated and selected for the crew.
