Overview

The California Conservation Corps partners with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to operate the NOAA-CCC Veterans Fisheries Corps Program, with support provided by U.S. Forest Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). The program enables U.S. Military Veterans to monitor species of concern and restore habitat for endangered fish populations. This program supports two national priorities: 1) expanding career paths for veterans and 2) protecting endangered species.

Veterans in the program learn new skills and gain expertise in natural resources management by completing relevant trainings and working in partnership with fisheries biologists and other experts on projects in the field. Individuals do not need prior experience to join the Veterans Fisheries Corps Program. This program is designed as an on-ramp to help veterans successfully compete for permanent employment in environmental fields.

Why We Work

Salmon, steelhead, trout, and other California native fish species hold high economic and cultural value. Yet, they are at risk of disappearing. According to a scientific study, if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise, 82% of California native fish species will be highly or critically vulnerable to climate change by 2100, compared with only 19% for alien species. The CCC trains Corpsmembers to protect California’s fish populations well into the future!

Gear UP

Each day, Corpsmembers gear up to make the world a better place. Check out what tools they use to make an impact and picture what life is like training for careers in fisheries!
