The California Conservation Corps is no stranger to rugged terrain and steep slopes, since 1976 Corpsmembers have weathered the elements and created hundreds of miles of trails across California. Recently, however, one CCC crew ventured beyond the Sierras to engage in a month-long cultural exchange program in Patagonia.

“My whole life I’ve grown up in a city,” said Corpsmember Gigi Munoz, “being out here to work on trails has been a blessing.”

Up in the Andes, the CCC crew partnered with local Chilean workers as well as volunteers from around the globe to restore and expand the trail network in the Torres Del Paine National Park.

“We were removing brush, threading, and preparing a bridge crossing that will probably get finished next year,” said Corpsmember Axel Rodriguez. The original trail was made by horses,” added Corpsmember Alina Ramirez, “We were doing this so people can get through more easily and safely.”

Patagonia’s landscape offered several new challenges for the Corpsmembers. While abroad, the crew had to acclimate to different weather and wildlife. On several occasions they even spotted a puma lurking nearby. Yet, the journey was all worth it.

“The spectacular views that you get to see, they’re really jaw dropping,” said Corpsmember Arturo Fernandez. “You get these beautiful ridges of mountains and a rainbow going through. I just really love that.”

Interacting with the local community was also a highlight of the exchange. Corpsmembers connected with Chilean locals over food, horseback riding, and educational excursions.

“It’s been culturally eye-opening to involve myself in the community here,” said Gigi Munoz. “You just see everyone really talking and engaging with each other and there’s a lot of value in that.”

Whether in California or abroad, the CCC is helping young adults expand their horizons through its paid training programs and experiences. This Patagonia exchange demonstrates how Corpsmembers are leveraging opportunities within the CCC to transform their lives.
