Salinas Forestry Crew Makes a Difference While Finding Career Paths

Corpsmembers with the Placer 1 fire crew cut fire line with hand tools as flames from the Dixie Fire approach in 2021.

More than four years after the CZU Lightning Complex Fire ravaged portions of San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties, the clean-up and recovery is still taking place.

The CCC Salinas Forestry Corps crew is helping clear the way for some of those improvements.

Working in Big Basin Redwoods State Park, they’re removing hazardous—and large—trees to allow the San Lorenzo Valley Water District to replace the damaged Peavine Pipeline.

Not only are the Corpsmembers gaining hands-on forestry experience, they’re helping provide safe drinking water to their neighbors in and around Boulder Creek.

Once this project is complete, the San Lorenzo Valley Water District will be able to repair and re-establish a water pipeline that’s been out of service since the fire.
