Reaching full containment on the Palisades Fire requires putting out and containing any remaining embers and hot spots.

CCC Camarillo fire crew 4 is among the crews hiking through ash covered hillsides to reach the smoldering remnants of the fire.

At the border of the black — burned areas — and the green — unburned vegetation — they work quickly to put out any signs of smoke.

When the smoke is large, they call on air assets to douse the flames to protect the nearby residents of Topanga.

Many of the Corpsmembers responding to the fire are originally from Los Angeles County. In the CCC, they’re spending their year of service in Northern California.

What these young adults are doing — some of whom are on their first fire — is protecting a community by building fire breaks and hand line to ensure the Palisades, or any future fire or flare up, won’t reach homes.

Their hard work means a boost in containment numbers and relief to residents. For the fire crews from CCC Fortuna and CCC Placer centers, it’s a chance to serve and make a difference.
